Kiba // Automatic Camera Experience
PROJECT/
The Kiba team were experts in camera technology and machine learning, with an interesting hypothesis. They believed that if a camera was capturing everyday moments in the home, we could use machine learning to find the best ones. From baby’s first steps, to playing with the cat, Kiba’s camera could capture life’s big-little moments. It frees us from being stuck behind the camera. We don’t have to even remember to use it.
They needed to test some of the core assumptions of their product. Does anything interesting happen in people’s homes? What kinds of clips would people get excited about? How would they share these moments?
Instead of asking people to imagine what it would be like, we created an experience prototype to bring key aspects of the Kiba experience to life. Using off the shelf technology, and faking the rest, we created a prototype that captured actual moments in people’s homes, sifted through them and fed the best ones back to the users. What we learned helped shape the direction of the product, and the company.
RESULT/
Our research helped to shape both how the camera works and how we talk about it. Kiba was a part of the Highway 1 Hardware Accelerator in early 2015, and launched their first product in the fall of the same year.
