In his now-classic best seller, The Lean Startup, Eric Reis made a prediction:

‘What is needed is a new kind of stock exchange, designed to trade in the stocks of companies organized to sustain long-term thinking.’

Nobody “took the bait,” so Eric decided to do it himself.  The Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE) seeks to align the interests of companies and investors, so that companies can focus more on their core business, and less on quarterly share prices.

Part of that strategy is to develop focused digital financial tools for startup founders and investors.  Our collaboration with LTSE began by talking to founders about how they manage and think about their cashflow.  They showed us how they model their finances now.  Some even shared their books with us so that we could create prototype visualizations of their actual financials.  Runway was built on iterative feedback about those visualization prototypes.  When founders could see new patterns and opportunities in their own data, we knew we were on to something.

Runway is about a lot more than the day you run out of money.  Founders need a way to model the consequences of future spending that is easy to use, but comprehensive enough to make accurate predictions.  Runway combines a simple interface with powerful data visualizations to free up founders spend their time exploring options, not building tools.
